IRELAND TAKE 'HOME' GOLD
The Irish Team of Shane Gilvarry, Liam Longmore, Liam O'Callaghan, Josie Barrett, Henry Ross, and managed by Pat Walsh, completed a memorable victory in this years' Home Nations Boat Championships held in Belmullet, Co. Mayo.
Despite the absence of Championship holders Scotland, who were unable to field a Team for this years' event, the Championships were a great success with over 20 species of fish recorded from the rich waters off the Belmullet coastline. For Ireland this was their first win for many years, and highlights the slender difference that now exists between the Home nations at this level.
Day one saw the England Team of Richard Russell, Mike Patten, Perry Dack, Dave Mann, Steve Clements take a slender lead of 8% into the final day of competition, whilst the Welsh team of Chris Pucher, Tim Theyer, Garry Hobbs, Chris Hamblin, Phil Clarke, managed by Robbie Roberts, needed to make up considerable ground if they were to stay in touch. Day two provided boat wins for England on two of the three boats, but a superb effort by the Irish pair of Josie Barrett and Liam Longmore pulled back the deficit, and gave the Home Team a well earned 13% victory. Final Scores were Ireland 888, England 875 and Wales 813.
England are hosts for the 2011 event which is being held in Weymouth, and they will be looking to go one better following three successive 'silver' placings on 'foreign' territory during the past three years.
The England Team wish to thank sponsors Tronix, Ammo, Swift Tackle, Red Gil, Sakuma, Weymouth Angling, Alderney Angling, Yorkshire Angling, Gemeni Tackle and the Roman Group for their support for the Team for this year's event.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON |
Dale Edmunds and son, Ronnie (aged 12) from Shanklin, Isle of Wight, both claim Shakespeare Boat prizes this month having enjoyed recent catches from Dales boat Fish Ardour, a warrior 165. Dale took his 6lb 13oz plaice during a spur of the moment Plaice trip. Ronnie's best fish went 5lb 10oz, both fish were caught on ragworm baits and taken from a mark close to the boat's home at Yaverland in Sandown Bay. It was Ronnie's first Plaice! ALLAN WATSON, RIP |
Allan Watson, the well known and respected Portsmouth tackle shop owner died suddenly after a short illness. Allan was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago but it wasn't the cancer that killed him. He told me only a few weeks ago that he had a few years left yet, how wrong he was, it just proves that we never know what's around the corner.
Allan was a true professional, he learned all the fishing disciplines, sea, shore and boat, coarse and game by actually taking part. He was an accomplished game, coarse and sea angler so could advise his customers accordingly.
Allan was always ready to help and give advice, and take the P*** on occasions, probably why half the England Men's Shore teams, past and present, turned up at his funeral. Many famous angling names, past and current, were at the church to say "Thank you and goodbye" to him.
I've known Allan for 24 years, ever since I ran club matches, he was full of good advice and his bait was excellent and he always ready with ideas to make the matches better.
Although he was 9 years younger than myself I was always happy to take advice from him, and not just about fishing, he was wise beyond his years, he was at times my mentor and I'll miss him greatly.
He leaves his wife Karon, three daughters, Donna, Sarah and Tina and six grandchildren to carry on his memory, I'm sure it will live on in his shop, which will now be run by his son in law Nicky, and the famous Allan's Marine Open.

New eel byelaw effective from 1st June 2010
http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/News/coarse-fishing-byelaws-2010.html
To protect threatened stocks, from 1 June all rod-caught eel and shad must be returned to the water alive, including when they are taken from estuaries and coastal waters. New national byelaws are coming into force at the beginning of the new fishing season. From 1 June, anglers will be restricted in the number, species and size of freshwater fish they can remove. The byelaws apply differently on rivers and stillwaters.
On rivers, once the season opens on 16 June, anglers may only remove each day:
* Up to 15 small fish (up to 20cm) of barbel, chub, common bream, common carp, crucian carp, dace, perch, pike, roach, rudd, silver bream, smelt or tench
* Up to two grayling of 30-38cm
* A single pike of up to 65cm
Anglers who remove more or different fish than this, will be committing an offence and risk a substantial fine.
Anglers can still remove:
* 'Tiddler' species, such as gudgeon
* Non-native species, such as zander
* Ornamental varieties of native species, such as ghost or koi carp
Anglers will still need the owner or occupier's permission to remove fish from private waters and fishery owners may also impose their own stricter rules.
On stillwaters, anglers may only remove fish if they have written permission from the fishery owner. Someone who takes fish without such permission will be committing a byelaw offence, as well as one of theft.
To protect threatened stocks, from 1 June all rod-caught eel and shad must be returned to the water alive, including when they are taken from estuaries and coastal waters.
Environment Agency Fisheries Manager Adrian Taylor said: "These byelaws achieve the right balance - they allow anglers to remove some freshwater fish for the pot or for bait, while still protecting valuable coarse fisheries. Stillwater fisheries will also be protected, but fishery managers will have the flexibility to allow anglers to take fish away.
"The Environment Agency wants to work with the angling community to make the most of these new powers. Fishery owners and clubs can help us focus our enforcement by providing prompt, accurate information on where and when people are removing fish illegally. We also want anglers to spread the word that mandatory catch and release is now generally the norm."
The byelaws are available for download from the Environment Agency website at: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/fishing/31465.aspx.
